In simple terms, scarring falls into two categories; pigmented or textured.
- Pigmented scars
Pigmented scars only affect the upper layers of the skin.
e.g. dark spots, red spots, or flat hyperpigmentation that is left behind after acne heals
- Textured scars
Can be several skin layers deep and make the surface of the skin feel and look bumpy.
e.g. ice pick scars, box scars, rolling scars, hypertrophic scars.
Usually, which scar treatment to use will depend on the type of scars that is being treated, as well as how well controlled your acne is and your skin type. The following treatment options are popular at our clinic.
There are broadly three types of treatment for acne scars.
A. MEDICAL TREATMENT: Not effective for acne scars itself. ❌
Medications are usually included for active acne if they are present with acne scars and as a part of after care for procedures done.
B. ADVANCED PROCEDURES: Highly effective ✔️.
1. Fractional CO2 Laser
2. CROSS Technique
3. Micro-needling
4. P-R-P / G.F.C (Growth Factor Concentrate)
5. Chemical Peeling
6. Fillers
C. SURGICAL TREATMENT: Highly effective ✔️
1. Subcision
2. Punch Excision & Suture
3. Punch Excision & Elevation
4. Punch Excision & Grafting
5. Fat grafting
- Acne scars treatment depends on type of scars.
- Each type of scar needs different treatment.
- Generally people having acne scars have combination of different types of scars.
- So a "combination of different modalities" ✅ is usually needed to get improvement in acne scars.
- After the assessment of your acne scars, your dermatologist will create a plan tailored to your needs and requirement.
- At VIVID, we consider several pointers while creating the plan including the scar type, skin condition, along with the patient’s overall health condition.
Chemical peels remove the topmost layer of skin cells from the skin surface, which is why peels are an ideal solution for treating pigmented scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Chemical peels can also be extremely useful in managing or controlling acne, as well as shrinking the size of enlarged pores.
The Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars or CROSS procedure involves depositing small amounts of a chemical at high concentration (70–100%) onto the surface of the atrophic scar. This causes a local inflammatory reaction leading to the formation of new collagen fibres thereby reducing depth of scars.
Multiple sessions needed depending on severity of acne scars at a interval of 2-4 weeks.
Benefits of CROSS technique:
✔️ Just 10-20 minute procedure.
✔️ Suitable for icepick scars.
✔️ Its topical non surgical procedure, so no systemic side-effects.
✔️ No rest needed, however strict sun protection is must.
Micro-needling involves pricking the skin with multiple tiny sterilized needles.
The tiny channels created causes the skin to make more collagen and elastin, which heals your skin and helps to reduce the depth of acne scar.
Multiple sessions needed depending on severity of acne scars.
Benefits of Microneedling:
✔️ Gives faster results with P-R-P.
✔️ Just 60-90 minutes needed.
✔️ Gives good results in all types of atrophic acne scars.
✔️ Patient can go to work directly after procedure. No rest needed.
✔️ Safe non surgical procedure.
- P-R-P in Acne Scars
- P-R-P is prepared from patient's own blood.
- Blood is centrifuged by standardized protocols to get increased concentration of platelets suspended in a small amount of plasma.
- P-R-P is injected into acne scars or applied over skin when used with microneedling.
- Multiple sessions needed depending on severity of acne scars at a interval of 1 month.
- GFC in Acne Scars
- GFC means Growth Factor concentrate, which is prepared from patient's own blood.
- Blood is centrifuged after release of growth factors from platelets by standardized protocols.
- GFC is then injected into acne scars or applied over skin when used with microneedling.
- Multiple sessions needed depending on severity of acne scars at a interval of 1 month.
Both P-R-P and GFC increase collagen production and thereby reducing acne scars.
Benefits of P-R-P/GFC:
✔️ Just 30-60 minute procedure.
✔️ Gives faster results when combined with Microneedling.
✔️ Can go to work directly after procedure. No rest needed.
✔️ Safe as patient's own blood is used.
✔️ Non surgical procedure.
Fractional CO2 Laser treatment has following benefits:

Subcision is a surgical treatment which is performed using a special needle which breaks fibrous bands that are pulling the skin downwards beneath the scar. The release of the fibrous bands and new collagen formation caused by wound healing leads to cosmetic improvement of the scar.
Usually 1-3 sessions needed depending on severity of acne scars at a interval of 1 month.
Benefits of Subcision:
✔️ Usually combined with other treatments for acne scars.
✔️ Just 30-45 minutes needed.
✔️ Gives good results in deep tethered Scars.
✔️ It's a surgical short procedure.
🔑 One should have REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS.
Well, The result may vary from person to person.
It also depends on types of scar, site of scar, size of scar and healing power of skin.
Generally 30-70% results can be expected after multiple sessions. Complete clearance is not possible.
For better result, your dermatologist will suggest you to combine different treatment modalities to give better result. So always ask all about treatment results prior to staring any therapy.
